Celebrating Legacy: Wellington Cricket’s Past Players Reunite at the Basin Reserve
On the Sunday of the NZ v England Test at the Cello Basin Reserve, we were proud to host the Wellington Men’s Cricketers Past Players Day in partnership with the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association (NZCPA) and Cricket Wellington.
For the second consecutive Test, our Peter Field Clubrooms atop the RA Vance Stand were filled with laughter, chatter, and plenty of reminiscing. Past players from across the generations gathered to share stories, relive memories, and enjoy world-class cricket.
It was amazing to see such a wide range of eras represented. Special thanks to those who came from beyond Wellington to join us, including: Jamie How (Central Districts), Anup Nathu (Canterbury), Dermot Payton (Central Districts).
A couple of years back, we asked Evan Gray to help us list all the Wellington (and other first-class) cricketers who have been Wanderers members or chosen to play for the Wanderers. The result? An incredible list filled with iconic names.
Here are just some of the players who’ve worn the Wanderers colours:
EJG, Erv McSweeney, Hamish Marshall (m), Steve Murdoch (m), Peter Holland (m), Liz Perry (m), Trevor McMahon (m), Don Neely (m), Richard Petrie (m), Matt McEwan, Azhar Abbas, Grant Cederwall (m), Brian Cederwall (m), Sally Morrison (m), Alecz Day, Grant Donaldson, Lincoln Doull (m), Jonathan Ross (m), Ewen Chatfield (m), Lee Edwards, Liz Scurr, Grant Elliott, Sam Fairley, Stephen Fleming, Martin Crowe, Roger Fouhy (m), Scott McHardy (m), Kevin Forde, Matt Bell, Scott Golder, Hamish Bennett, Mark Houghton, Glynn Howell, Rhys Morgan, Deepak Joon, Leigh Kelly, Luke Woodcock, Vanessa Chatfield, Robbie Kerr, Scott Kuggeleijn, Andy McKay, Greg McKenzie (m), Doug Pollock (m), Steve Maguiness, Graham Murray, Jim Newbegin (m), Ross Ormiston (m), Ben Orton, Mike Sears, Matt Taylor, Paul Tindall (m), Illi Tugaga, Ash Turner, David Whiting (m), Bert Vance, Ross Verry (m), Richard White, Scott Weenink (m), Glenn Wilkinson (m), Brett Williams, Jono Sole (Akld), Bruce Edgar, Trish MacKelvey, Maureen Peters, Barb Bevage, Jill Saulbury, Pru Hyman, Linda Lindsay, Cheryl Henshilwood, John Beck (m), Ru Morgan (m), Diddy Knapp (m), Bob Vance (m), John Morrison (m), Richard Collinge (m), Anthony Stewart (NSW and Australia), Dermot Payton (CD)
This roll call highlights just how deep the history of the Wanderers runs — from Black Caps legends to passionate domestic players and incredible women cricketers.
If you’re a past player or know someone who should be on this list, get in touch with Wanderers or Paul at NZCPA. We’d love to hear your stories and keep celebrating the Wellington Wanderers legacy.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day a success. Special thanks to Paul Hobbs (NZCPA), Todd Bryant (Cricket Wellington), and the Wanderers Committee for their continued support to connect past players.
This event is becoming an annual tradition — and one you don’t want to miss.
