Redemption and Reflection: Lou Vincent’s Journey Captivates at the Wanderers Test Breakfast

For over 25 years, the Wanderers Test Breakfast has been a cherished tradition on the first morning of the Basin Test, bringing together lovers of the game and Wanderers Members like few other events can. This year was no exception as Wanderers, guests and kindred friends all gathered before play in the Norwood Room at the Cello Basin Reserve before day 1 of the New Zealand v England Test Match.

We were privileged to have former BlackCap Lou Vincent as our guest speaker. Half an hour barely felt like enough time to take in Lou’s incredible journey — from his early days in Adelaide and Auckland, to his debut in Perth, through his struggles and, ultimately, his road to redemption.

Lou spoke openly and courageously about his fall from grace due to match-fixing, the deep impact it had on his life, and his difficult path to recovery. He reflected on the public shame that led to estrangement from his daughters, his mental health battles, and his slow journey back to the game he once loved, lost, and is now reconnecting with.

As Nick Hoult, Chief Cricket Correspondent for the Telegraph, captured in his piece on Lou: it’s a story of despair, accountability, and hope for redemption. Today, Lou is working in anti-corruption education, sharing his experiences in the hope of making a positive impact on the game and rebuilding his relationship with his family.

A huge thank you to Paul Hobbs (NZCPA) and Joey Yovich (Seddon CC) for helping make this event possible. Lou’s honesty, vulnerability, and willingness to share his story left a lasting impression on many in attendance.

This Test Breakfast reminds us of the power of cricket to connect, reflect, and grow — a tradition we’re proud to continue.
