Wanderers Community Impact Report

Over the past 12 months, the Wellington Wanderers Cricket Club has significantly impacted the Wellington community and youth cricket. Here’s a look at our achievements, community engagement, and the positive outcomes of our programmes and events.

Membership Growth

We now have 206 members, up from 150 last year. This includes:

62 Junior Members (up from 22, a 182% increase)

144 Senior Member (up from 104, a 19% increase)

This growth highlights our club’s expanding reach and the increasing interest in helping grow youth cricket within our community.

Community Engagement

Our members contributed 1,200 volunteer hours this year, a testament to their dedication and the club’s strong community spirit. These initiatives and events demonstrate our collaborative approach and commitment to fostering a supportive cricketing community.

Wanderers Young Cricketers Programme

We are thrilled to report a 30% growth in the Wanderers Young Cricketers Programme this season. This programme introduces a promising group of 18 young talents poised to make a mark in the cricketing landscape. These young cricketers come from diverse schools across the Wellington Region who don’t have access to the best coaching opportunities, showcasing the inclusive nature of our club:  Tawa College, Aotea College, Wellington High School, St Catherine’s College, Samuel Marsden Collegiate, Heretaunga College, Sacred Heart College, Upper Hutt College and Rongotai College.

Fixtures

This year, we hosted a total of 50 fixtures and created cricket experiences for 550 players:

  • 8 School Girls Fixtures

  • 8 Schoolboy Youth XI Fixtures

  • 12 Wanderers Fixtures vs School Boys 1st XIs

  • The Hunt Trophy tournament with 10 secondary school 1st XI teams

  • 7 Kindred Fixtures (35+ age group)

  • 5 Over 50s Fixtures

Wellington Past Player Engagement Events

In total, we engaged 90 past players through our two past player events, enhancing our community network and celebrating our club’s rich history. These 2 past player events in partnership with Cricket Wellington and NZCPA:

  • Firebirds Past Player Event: 40 past players

  • Blaze Past Wellington Women’s Player Event: 50 past players

These events demonstrate our collaborative approach and commitment to fostering a supportive cricketing community.

Clubrooms Attendance

Our clubrooms were bustling during key matches. Here’s a snapshot of attendance:

  • BLACKCAPS v Australia Test Match: 130 members and guests

  • White Ferns v England ODI: 50 members and guests

  • Super Smash Opener: 36 members and guests

David Grey Youth Cricket Trust

We set up this trust following receipt of a bequest from one of our founding members. The trustees, who are appointed by the club, apply the income of the trust to grants in support of youth cricket in the Wellington region. The focus of the trust is on improvement of facilities at clubs and schools which will benefit youth cricket. The trust often works in conjunction with the Norwood Cricket Trust.

Looking Ahead

We have ambitious plans for the future, including expanding our Young Cricketers Programme academy to nurture future talent, expanding our community outreach to include more schools and local organisations.

We are proud of our achievements this year and grateful for the support from our members, volunteers, sponsors, and the wider community. Our goals remain big as we continue to grow our initiatives, ensuring we can keep fostering a love for cricket and supporting young cricketers on and off the field in the Wellington Region.
