Young Wellington Players to play Willows CC V Waitaki Boys College

Wanderers Player Profiles: Afase Fa’avae and George Wells

This weekend Wanderers Cricket Club are sending two boys from the Rongotai College 1st XI to The Willows to play in a match against Waitaki Boys College. This exchange is the first in what both clubs hope will be regular exchanges allowing young cricketers, male and female to experience cricket in a different environment.

For the cricketers chosen, Afase Fa’avae and George Wells cricket really is a family affair. George has been in the Rongotai College XI since year 9, many of those alongside his older brother Henry who was captain of the side, a role that George now holds. George has also been a regular attendee at Firebirds training, wheeling down his left arm wrist spinners with more and more maturity. He is really developing quickly, bats well and had a good cricket brain.

On Saturdays he now plays for the Easts 2nd XI alongside his brother with dad Jason also filling in from time to time. During those years in the 1st XI dad Jason, a former Wellington captain was also the coach. Football holds a major place in the Wells family during winter with both George and Henry playing for the school while following the Wells family tradition of supporting Miramar Rangers FC.

The Fa’avae family have taken things a step further. Three brothers are in the 1st XI, Afase the oldest alongside the twins Setu and Sila. They are all very good batsmen and offer the options of being handy with the ball in hand when required. Afase has been in the XI since year 10 and his brothers since Year 11.

Their parents will always be found supporting the boys on match day while mum, Teresa makes sure visiting teams enjoy one of Rongotai College’s famous afternoon teas.

While all three boys are very promising cricketers, they also excel in the winter codes of Rugby Union and Rugby league. Afase splits his time between Rugby Union with the 1st XV and Rugby League showing great ability at all sports.

We wish them well and hope they enjoy the experience of playing at The Willows. Image from left to right - Afase Fa’avae, Lauchie Johns, Jason Wells, George Wells
