Rekindling an old relationship with Palmerston North Boys High School.

On Thursday 7 December WWCC travelled to rekindle an old relationship with Palmerston North Boys High School. This was traditionally a fixture that was always part of the famous Wanderers tours back in the 80s and 90s, so we’re thrilled to be back playing a school that shares a history with the Wanderers.

Hamish Marshall captained a very strong side, which needed to be as PNBHS are the Central Districts 1st XI champions, so this was always going to be one of the toughest games of the summer. The team consisted of two former NZ players including Jamie How (PNBHS old boy), several current young Wellington, and current older Wellington representative players, plus a few old boys of the school.

Batting first in the 40 over per side contest, on an incredibly slow track which was hard to bat on, the Wanderers only managed 167 for 6. This was going to be a tough chase for the PNBHS lads, who ultimately fell short in the end against a strong bowling attack. The game though was played in great spirits, and WWCC were superbly hosted by the school, and we thank them for this.

To Richard Calkin, WWCC member, current Wellington over 60s representative, and old boy of PNBHS, thank you for reinstating this wonderful fixture to our summer calendar. To PNBHS we wish you all the very best at the Gillette cup finals next week, and we look forward to meeting again in 2024.
